Change a Child’s Life.

What is a Foster Parent?
What is a Foster Parent?

What is a foster parent? For LVFT, our foster parents, or as we refer to them, resource parents, are our heroes. No, they don’t wear capes and fly around in tights, but they do perform selfless acts of kindness and love on a daily basis to a child in need of a safe and nurturing home.

Our parents are resource parents for a unique reason. LVFT is fostering with a difference because our focus is on shortening the time a child is in care and returning them to their biological family (always when safety is ensured). It is well documented—a child does best when time in care is as short as possible. Our resource parents subscribe to our philosophy and work as part of the treatment team, alongside the biological parents, to help the child while in care and also in the transition back home. When possible, they lend support to the biological parents and encourage their progress. When children see everyone working together, they have a better chance at succeeding themselves.

As our name says, Lehigh Valley Families Together, Inc. was established and operates in and for the families of the Lehigh Valley. We are from the Valley and we know the programs and services in the area to help our families succeed. Our staff work with hundreds of area agencies, organizations and groups to make necessary connections for those we serve.

While we affectionately refer to ourselves as a ma and pa shop, don’t let our size mislead you. Because we maintain our operations exclusively within the Lehigh Valley, we are able to offer high-quality programming with targeted services geared specifically to the needs of our families. From the family workers, to our resource parents, to our President—everyone works together to help the families we work with reach their goals.

How We Keep Families Together.
How We Keep Families Together.

Through our various programming, LVFT works to keep families together by subscribing to the following tenets:

  • Safety for children is our highest priority.
  • The family is the focus of service and their beliefs and values must be respected.
  • An intact birth family is the first and best option for children, whenever safety is ensured.
  • When placement is necessary, reunifying children and their parents is of most importance.
  • Families facing turmoil can change.
  • Successful families can be a resource for families in need of assistance and support.
  • Interaction and strong linkages between families and their communities is essential to health and well-being.
  • The definition of “family” is varied and each should be approached as a unique system with its own strengths.
  • Strong families build strong communities.

“You always respect all of your clients and really help them with things that they need. The workers that assisted me were very good and respectful toward me. You are attentive with your clients and you did not make me feel like just another case. I hope that these services always exist to help all people who really need assistance.”
